Some Pulp

私の「オレンジジュース好き」は有名だ（友達の間で）。

I am famous for being an "orange juice lover" (among my friends.)

どこへ行ってもオレンジジュースをたのむので「オレンジゆうちゃん」の異名を持ってもおかしくないぐらいである。（幸いなことに、そんなあだ名をつける友達はいなかったけど・・・）

Since I order an orange juice wherever I go, you could call me "Orange Yuko." (Fortunately, no friend has called me such a nickname.)

実を言うと、私は好き嫌いがとても多い。

To tell the truth, I am a picky eater. (drinker?)

まぁ、もの凄く好意的に解釈すれば「とても繊細な舌を持つ」（おっ！なんかカッコいい！）ので、コーヒーや炭酸飲料、そしてアルコールが飲めない。

If we speak favorably, since I have a very delicate sense of taste, (Wow! Sounds cool!) I can’t drink coffee, soda, and alcohol.

そうなると必然的に、お茶かジュースかの選択肢ぐらいしかなくなるのである。

Naturally, there are few options left for me, such as tea or juice.

そして私はその少ない選択肢の中から常にオレンジジュースを積極的に選択し、子供の頃から、ひたすらあらゆる場所でオレンジジュースを飲み続けてきた。（どうでもいいけど、和食やお寿司屋さんで驚異的な市場占有率を誇る「バヤリース」はなんとかならないものだろうか？果汁５０％、いやせめて３０％でいいから果汁率を上げてほしいと常々願っているものである。そんなところでオレンジジュースをたのむなという声が聞こえてきそうだけど・・・。）

And I always choose orange juice positively from my few choices, and have continued drinking orange juice intently in many places since my childhood.

フランスに行った時には、「ルジュドランジェ、シルヴプレ」、スペインに行った時には「キエロズーモデナランハ」、イタリアに行った時には、「スッコ・アランチャ、ペルファヴォーレ」中国に行った時には、「チンゲイウォーイーベイチェンジー」と外国語の壁にも負けずに世界各国（実際は数か国）で無事オレンジジュースの注文に成功してきた人間なのだ。

When I went to France, I said," jus d'orange, s'il vous plait!" when I visited in Spain, I said," Quiero zumo de naranja!" When I have been in Italy, "succo d'arancia, per favore!” and I traveled in China, I said, “請給我一杯橙汁!” I am the one who succeeded in ordering orange juice happily all over the world (actually, in several countries) while overcoming the language barrier.

（悲しいかな全部ばりばりのカタカナ発音だったけど、それでも奇跡的に通じたのだから現地の方の理解力は敬服に値する。）

(Alas! I pronounced these words with a Japanese accent in whichever language I spoke, nevertheless I succeeded in ordering miraculously. The ability to understand waiters and waitresses was worthy of admiration.)

つまり、私は、ちょっとしたオレンジジュースに一家言を持つ人間といえるだろう。（エッヘン！）

In other words, it may be said that I am the person who has a personal opinion about orange juice.  (Ahem!)

 

その私が、今日はハワイのオレンジジュースについて語ってみたい
I would like to talk about the orange juice in Hawaii today. 

先々週にも書いたが、ハワイは食品が高い。

I wrote it the week before last, but food in Hawaii is expensive.

オレンジジュースも御多分にもれず、とても高い。

Orange juice is also expensive like many other foods.

しかし、オレンジジュース好きの私としては、高いからといって「はい、そうですか」とは引き下がれない。

However, I as an orange juice lover can’t back down because it is expensive.

これだけは譲れないもの、それが私にとって「オレンジジュース」なのだ。

What I never give up is an orange juice for me.

ハワイで暮らし始めて間もない頃、私はスーパーにずらりと並ぶオレンジジュースに対峙した。

Shortly after I came to Hawaii, I faced a lot of different kinds of orange juices in a row in the supermarket.

「ぎょえー！やっぱり高い」（お中元・お歳暮時期になると出てくるデパートの特選ジュース並みである）と思って眺めているところに、私は奇妙な文字を発見した。

When I shouted in my mind, “%&$#～！（There is no English equivalent.）As I expected, it is expensive!” I realized there are unfamiliar words on the bottle of orange juices.

「Some Pulp」

Some pulp.

「Pulp?」私は、私の頭の中の貧弱な英単語帳を必死にめくってみたが、なんだかわからない。

"Pulp?" Although I desperately turned over my poor word book in my head, there is no “pulp” there.

そこで、運悪く（彼にとって）そばを通りかかった店員さんに無邪気に聞いてみた。
Then, I innocently asked  the salesclerk who happened to pass by my side by bad luck (for him).

彼は「うっ」と答えに詰まった。

He was at a loss for an answer.

そりゃあそうだろう。

That makes sense.

Pulpとは果肉の部分なのだが、たどたどしい英語を話す外国人にどう説明すればいいというのか。
How can you explain what pulp is to a foreigner who speaks faltering English and doesn’t know even pulp’s meaning?

もし私が日本で、外国の方にかなりカタコトの日本語で「カニクッテナンデスカー」と聞かれたら頭をかかえるだろうな・・・。だって果肉は果肉なのだから。

If I was asked by foreign people who speak broken Japanese, “what is pulp” in Japan, the problem must have me tearing my hair out because it is difficult to explain “pulp” in plain Japanese.

しかし彼は偉かった。

However, he was great.

オレンジを絞るジェスチャーで私にパルプがなんであるかを説明してくれたのだ。

He illustrated to me what pulp was by a gesture to squeeze an orange.

なるほどー。

I got it!

「No pulp(果肉なし)」、「Some pulp（適度に果肉）」、「High pulp(果肉たっぷり)」とPulp各種取り揃えておりますってことなのね。

Pulp can be chosen by No pulp, Some pulp, High pulp, to a person’s liking.

ここまで、オレンジジュースにこだわりを見せるとは、なんだか私ととても気の合いそうな国である。

I feel that I belong in the country which is particular about orange juice.

いろいろ試した結果、私の一番のお気に入りは、これ！

As a result of having tried various brands, my first favorite is this one!

さて、一昨日あたりから朝晩少し肌寒くなって、この常夏の島にも冬が訪れた模様。

There is a little chill in the air in the morning and evening since three days ago, and the winter has come in an island of eternal summer.

風邪などひかないように、おいしいオレンジジュースでビタミンCを補給しなくちゃ！

I have to have a delicious orange juice to take a vitamin C for prevention of a cold!
