Price Magic

 

まさにハロウィーン一色だった今週。

In this week, Halloween gaiety was taken over Hawaii.

 朝一のクラスに出席するために早朝に家を出た私は、コンドミニアムの入り口で、すでにばっちり吸血鬼に仮装したカップルにばったり！（あのー、早朝なんですけど・・・。そもそも吸血鬼って朝日に当たると死んじゃうんじゃなかったっけ？）

Though I left my condominium early in the morning because I am taking morning class, I ran into a couple who dressed up as Vampires at the entrance. (Uh— it was early in the morning.Vampires’re gonna die when they are exposed the sunlight in the first place, don’t they? )

これで予想はついたけど・・・やっぱり！クラスメートも仮装して授業に参加！(くどいようだけど、朝一のクラスなんだよね・・・)

As was expected would happen, some classmates wore Halloween costumes in class. I knew it! (Forgive me for repeating myself, but it was a morning class!)

当然だけど日本とはハロウィーンに対するモチベーションが根本から違うのね。
As a matter of course, people’s motivations for the Halloween in the U.S completely differ from Japan!

このお祭り騒ぎを目の当たりにした私は、その夜、手作りの魔女の三角帽子をかぶってクラスメートとワイキキの町に繰り出した！

With the Halloween gaiety before my very eyes, I wore my handcraft witch's hat and took to the street with my classmates in Waikiki.

すっごい盛り上がり！この日は夜中まで人と車の列が途切れることはなかった。

The Halloween mood was rising to fever pitch! The streams of people and cars did not break off to after midnight.

来年はもっと本格的な仮装に挑もうと誓った本場ハロウィーン初体験だった。

That was my first experience in the home of Halloween festivities and I decided to challenge myself to wear a full costume next year.

 ところでもう一つの魅惑的なハロウィーン体験は、家の近くのカフェでなにげに配っていたキャンディーを手に取ったら、なんとクッキー、そしてフリードリンクまでもが当たってしまったことだろう！(このクッキーが、また！ウエストのクッキーよりおいしいかも！）

By the way, another fascinating Halloween experience is that I won cookies and a free drink at the cafe near my condominium.

This cookkie is the most delicious cookie I've ever had in Hawaii!

 

なんと素晴らしい！

Wow! How splendid the Halloween is!

この物価が高いハワイで、独り暮らしの学生には大変有難いことである。

It is really thankful for a student who lives alone in Hawaii where the prices are so high.

そこで！今日のテーマはハワイの物価である。

Here we go! Today’s theme is the prices in Hawaii.

量とか質とかが違うので、単純に比べるのは難しいけど、わかりやすいところで日本人の私を驚愕させたのは、次のワースト５である。

I know the prices of each country don’t bear easy comparison because there are differences in quality or quantity etc, but in intelligible examples, these are the worst 5 things in hawaii which were astonished me.

ワースト 1はなんといっても教科書！

Definitely, the worst is the prices of textbooks!

これは私のCOM201の教科書の値段だが、この価格に驚かない日本人はほぼいないと思われる。

This is a price of the my textbook for COM201. I think there is no Japanese who is not surprised at this price.

 一冊、１万円超って(;´Д｀)！

It is over 10,000 yen per a volume!

 平均2000円ぐらいの日本の教科書からすると、これは法外な値段である。

Comparing about 25 dollars average price of Japanese textbooks, this is extravagant!

 神様！円高にしてくれて有難う！これが1ドル120円の時だったらと思うと恐ろしい！（ほぼ１万5000円？？）

Thank God for a strong yen!  The very thought of a time of being 120 yen of 1 dollar frightens me (About 15,000 yen?)  

 

日本も医学部とかの教科書は高いと聞くけど、一般教養でこんな値段の教科書を使ったら暴動がおきるだろう。（その前に誰も履修しないか・・・）
If professors use such expensive textbooks in Japan (except medical school,) riots will break out. (Or nobody will take the classes.)

 でもここではこれが普通

However, this is average price here.

初めて教科書を買いに行った時、思わず二度見してしまったのは言うまでもない。

It goes without saying that I could not help doing double take, when I went to buy textbooks first time.

ワースト 2はレント（家賃）である。

The second worst is rent.

 ハワイは全米一高い家賃を誇るのだ。

Rent in Hawaii is the highest price in the U.S.

日本も高いといわれるけど、女子学生が安全に一人暮らしできる場所、という観点から考えると、やっぱりハワイの家賃は相当高いと思う。（部屋さがしの大変さについても今度触れたい）

Although it is said that rent in Japan is also higher than other countries, when I consider the point that girl students live alone safety, I have to say rent in hawaii is outrageous! (I’m gonna talk about difficulties of finding a room next time!)

 

３位はティッシュ！
The third worst is tissues!

 こちらに来て最初の一か月間は、ホストファミリーの家にホームステイをしていたんだけど、初日からホストマザーの一言にカルチャーショックを受けた。「ティッシュは自分で買ってね！」

I stayed at my host family’s house for one month of the beginning. The first day, the words which my host mother said already came as a culture shock. She said "You have to buy your tissues yourself"

「ティッシュ？」思わず聞き返した私。

“Tissues?” I irresistibly asked her in return.

だってだって、日本じゃティッシュって５箱で２００円ぐらいなんだもん。ポケットティッシュにいたっては、無料でもらえるものって意識しかなかったし・・・。

I mean that tissues’ price is about $2.50 in five boxes in Japan. Moreover, I can get pocket tissue for free every day because many companies give away pocket tissues as  advertisements.

でも値段を見て納得。ティッシュ１箱２～３ドルって！！！！！（断っておくが、「鼻セレブ」とかでは決してない！）

The mystery solved soon, but I still can’t believe I have to pay 2 to 3 dollars per one box of tissue in Hawaii!

これではおちおち風邪もひけやしない！

Under the condition, I can’t catch a cold at ease.

 私は思わず日本にいる友達にメールした。

I couldn’t help sending e-mail to my friends in Japan!

 ハワイからの私の第一声が「ティッシュが高い！」だったことはある意味悲しい現実である(ﾉ_-｡)。

It was sad fact that my first speech from Hawaii was “Tissues are expensive!!”

４位は卵

The fourth worst is egg.

日本で一ダース１００円前後の卵が、スーパーによっては、３、４ドルする。

In Japan, a price of a dozen eggs is about $1.20, but in Hawaii, a price of a dozen eggs is about $3.00-4.00.

卵が一番比べ易いけど、卵に限らずハワイは食品が全般的に高い！

Though I mentioned the price of eggs because it is easy to compare, it is not only eggs but also all foods are expensive in Hawaii

ハワイアンスタディーのクラスの教授によると、これが現在のハワイの問題のひとつになっているらしい。（たまには学習成果を披露しなければ！）

According to the professor of Hawaiian Studies class, this is one of the problems of present Hawaii. (I have to present an academic achievement occasionally!)

５位ハンバーガー。

The fifth worst is hamburger.

今や世界中どこにいっても食べられるマクドナルド。

We can eat McDonald's hamburger almost everywhere in the world these days.

物のウェブサイトによると、ビッグマック指数なるものが存在するらしい。

Some web sites say so-called Big Mac index seems to exist.

つまりビッグマックの価格によってその国の物価を測るのね。
That is, the prices of each country are measured by the price of Big Mac.

でもマックに限らず、ハンバーガーの値段が高い気がする。
I feel hamburgers are expensive in Hawaii; it is not only McDonald's but also all fast food restaurants.

まぁその分、おいしいんだけど（ハンバーガーの味については別の機会に述べたい）

However, it is expensive but taste better than Japanese hamburgers. (I’m gonna talk about taste of hamburger another opportunity.)

日本の１００円マックに慣れていた私としては、ファーストフードって学生の味方じゃないのー？と叫びたいほど、お値段お高めである。

I who is familiar to Japanese "100 yen Mac" (about $1.20 Mac) want to shout “Are fast food restaurants friend of student?”

 と、たいていハワイの物価は高いのだが、これがセールの時になると値引き率がハンパないのだ。

Although the prices of Hawaii are usually high, a discount rate is high percentage in Hawaii at the time of sale.

日本だと、普段２５０円のものがセールになると２２０円とかになるぐらいだけど、こちらでは、平気で１００円値引き、へたすると半額になったりする。

A thing which is $2.99 become $2.40 on sale in Japan, but in Hawaii, a thing which is $2.99 become $1.99 on sale or sometimes half price.

毎週日曜日にセールを行う「ロングスドラッグス」
本当に普段は上の値段で売ってるんだから凄い!

 

そして不思議なのはまとめ買いのマジック！
In addition, the most mysterious phenomenon is buying in bulk.

こちらのお水一本１ドル１０セント。これが２４本パックでいくらでしょうか？

When a bottle of water here is 1 dollar and ten cents, how much will this be in 24 bottles? 

驚くべきことに正解は４ドル９９セント！　はい(*ﾟρﾟ)？？？？

Surprisingly, the answer is 4 dollars and 99 cents. A big question mark comes to my head!

算数を習いはじめた小学生にはとても見せられないこの答え。

This answer is hardly shown to the primary schoolchild who has begun to learn arithmetic because they must be confused.

1.10×24=4.99

 アインシュタインの相対性理論もびっくりの数式である

The numerical formula must be more difficult to solve than the theory of relativity of Einstein.

どこで、どうなったら、こうなるのやら・・・・（ ﾟ ρ ﾟ )？？？？

How on earth it turns out like this...?

高い食品とは対照的に生活用品は安いものが多いように感じる。

Moreover, by contrast with expensive food, living necessities are relatively cheaper than Japan.

たとえば、このベッドカバーセット。クッションもついて、これで3,000円～5,000円ぐらい！(日本で買ったら20,000円はくだらないと思う)

For example, these bed ensembles including three cushions are 40-60 dollars in Hawaii. (If I buy these set in Japan, probably, I have to pay at least 200 dollars.)

シーツやシャワーカーテンなども格安で揃えられる。

We can also get bed lines and shower curtains are prepared at a bargain price.

食品が高くて、生活用品が安いってまるっきり日本と逆の発想だなぁ。

Foods are expensive and living necessities are cheap. Feelings of prices are completely reverse to Japan.

最後に付け加えると、学生用バスパスだと月々の交通費もとても安い！月３０ドルで島内どこでも行けちゃうのは素晴らしい！

Monthly transportation expenses are also very cheap because we can buy a student bus pass!  It is amazing we pay about 30 dollars per month and we can go everywhere in whole island.

時に「高い！」と叫び、時に「めっちゃ安い」と狂気乱舞する。（あー、忙しい！）

Sometimes I shout, "That’s too expensive!" and sometimes I dance for joy “Wow!  It’s a snitch!” (I’m so busy)

 で、結局ハワイって物価が高いの？安いの？

After all, are the prices in Hawaii high or low?  

うーん、簡単には答えがでない難問である。

Well, it is too difficult problem to solve it easily.
