Sound of Terror

私のアパートには重大な欠点がある。

My apartment has a serious fault.

それはラナイ（ベランダ）がないこと。

It does not have Lanai.

日本においてもベランダがないと洗濯物がほせなくて、それはそれで大変なことなのだが、ハワイの生活では、ラナイでのひとときというのが、極上のリラクゼーションタイムを約束してくれる重要なものなのだ。（なんか悲しい対比）

If there is no veranda in Japan, we cannot air laundry and it is serious problem in its way, but in the Hawaiian life, a Lanai is an important thing which promises the best relaxation time. (It sounds sad comparison)

私のアパートの向かいのアパートでは、朝といわず昼といわず、夜といわず、皆さん実に楽しそうにラナイ生活を楽しんでいらっしゃる。

In the apartment across the street of my apartment, people enjoy Lanai life very happily in the morning, daytime, night and every time.

 

ハワイはただ常夏の島であるだけではない。

Hawaii is by no means just only an island of the everlasting summer.

寒くもなく、暑くもなく、ここちよい風がいつも吹いていて、こんな風に一年中外でゆったりと過ごせるというのは、ハワイの最大の良さであると私は思う。
I think that it is the greatest merit of Hawaii that we can spend a very relaxed time outside all the year round in the pleasant breeze without annoying cold and hot.

日本の夏は湿度が高く、夜になっても昼間の熱気が残っていてベタベタするので、冷房のある部屋の中の方が快適なのだ。

Since it is so humid in the summer in Japan, humidity and the heat of the day stays even in night and is sticky, it is more comfortable to be  in the room which has an air conditioner.

（まぁ、ビールを飲む人にとっては、その暑さの中で感じる一杯目のビールののどごしががそれこそ最高なのだそうだけど・・・。あの「くぅー」だか「ぷはーっ」ってやつね。残念ながらビールを飲めない私は、みんなから「人生半分損してるよね」と同情の目でみられる。）

(However, my friends who like beer often say that it is awesome to drink beer in the heat of the night and I who cannot drink beer loss half of my life.)

それから何といっても重要なのは、「蚊がいない」ことである。

And another crucial point is that there is no mosquito in Hawaii.

正確にいえばハワイにももちろん蚊はいるが、それはとても少数で、日本の蚊の獰猛さに比べると、笑っちゃうぐらい攻撃力が弱い。

To be precise, of course the mosquitos are in Hawaii, they are few and they have weak offensive ability compared to ferocious mosquitos in Japan.

日本の首都圏にはそれこそ、オアフの37倍、約3700万人もの人々がひしめいているが、その人口を持ってしても一人ひとりに割り当てられる蚊の数はそれを優に超えている。いったいどんだけの蚊が生息しているのか、考えるのも恐ろしい数であることは間違いない。

Although approximately 37 million people, about 37 times of Oahu’s population, are crowding in the metropolitan area in Japan, but the number of the mosquitos which is assigned to each one seems to exceed easily. It must be so fearful number that it's horrifying just thinking how many mosquitoes inhabit in Japan.

奴らは日本の夏が大好きだ。
They truly love summer in Japan.

そして、いたるところに現れる。

Moreover, they are everywhere.

最悪なのは自分の部屋に奴らが忍んでいた時だ。

The worst case is they hid in my room.

いったん耳元で、あの「ぷーん」という音を聞くと退治するまで眠れない。
Once I hear the sound “the buzz of a mosquito” close to my ears in the middle of the night, I cannot sleep until I exterminate it.

飛び起きて電気をつけて、蚊を探すが、いったい狭い私の部屋のどこに消えたのか探しているとみつからないのだ。
I jump out of bed; put the light on and looks for a mosquito carefully, but I can’t find them where on earth they disappear in my small room.

仕方がないので、寝たふりをして（蚊を相手にオスカー並みの演技力を要するとは、日本の夏は本当に大変である。）蚊が近づいてくるのを待ち、また飛び起きて電気をつけて探すということを夜中に何度も繰りかえす。
I pretend to be asleep (To spend in summer in Japan is really hard job to be required about the same theatrical skills as Oscar winners to a mosquito) and wait for a mosquito to approach because and there is nothing I can do. I repeatedly do such a set that I jump out of bed again; turn the light on and looks for a mosquito in the middle of the night.

ハワイに住んでいる人からすると、奇妙極まりない行動のように思えるだろうが、この話は日本人には絶大な共感を呼ぶのだ。
I know people in Hawaii regard these actions as odd, but this topic evokes the greatest Japanese’s sympathy.

ためしに、「寝てる時に蚊が耳元にくると寝られないよねー（実際経験がなかったとしても）」と日本人に話しかけてみてほしい。盛り上げること請け合いである。
Please try to speak to Japanese "The most unpleasant thing is to be prevented sleep when a mosquito comes to close to our ears while sleeping (even if you are inexperienced in fact.)" I am absolutely certain that the conversation became heated.

因みに、「蚊　夜　耳元」のキーワードでサーチエンジン検索すると３６８万件がヒットする。
By the way, if you google in keywords of "mosquito, night, ears," there are 3,680,000 site hits.
 

だからもちろん蚊対策グッズもバラエティー豊かにそろっている。

For this reason, goods against mosquitos are full of variety.

果ては、血液型分析まで持ち出す始末。

We end up broaching blood type analysis.

笑ってはいけない。テレビ番組で、真面目に実験してしまうほど、私たちは切実なのだ。（因みに私はもっとも蚊に刺されやすいとされるO型である。これを聞いた時の私のショックさ加減ときたら・・・。）

Please don't laugh at us. We are serious that we earnestly make an experiment in TV  program. （By the way, my blood type is O-type which supposed to be the most easy to be bitten by mosquitos. I was stunned by this news whether it is true or not.）

そう、私たちはそれぞれ自分なりの対処方法を持っており、一人ひとりが蚊のエキスパートといえるだろう。

Yes! Each Japanese tends to have his/her own coping methods and it can be said that each person is an expert of a mosquito.

たとえば私の場合、虫よけスプレーに肌荒れを起こすので、化粧水を体につけておくと蚊にかまれにくくなるという技を編み出した。しかし、これは初秋に出てくるシマシマ蚊には効かないとかいろいろ。

In my case, since I will have a rough skin by using insect repellant spray, I thought out the method of hard to be bitten that put my whole body on some lotion. However, this method doesn’t work against striped mosquitos which swarm in early fall, or　something.  

いけない！蚊の話になるとつい熱弁をふるってしまう。

Oops, when it comes to a mosquito, I inadvertently make a passionate speech.

とにかく、蚊の攻撃におびえることもなく、さらさらのここちよい風の中で戸外で過ごせることであることは外国人、特にアジア圏の人々にとっては、とてもとても素晴らしいことである。

Anyhow, I think that it is marvelous for foreign people, especially people  from Asia that we can loosen up in the open air in a smooth comfortable wind without being frightened by the attack of mosquitos.

今週は日本から友達が遊びに来てくれたので、学期末のペーパー地獄をかいくぐって、おいしいレストランでお食事をした。

In this week, since my friends came here from Japan, I somehow juggled the end of the semester paper from hell, and having dinner at nice restaurants.

どちらのお店も、ここちよい風を感じられる素敵なお店だった。

日本人だけではなく、すべての人にとって、ここはまさにパラダイスアイランドなのである。
Not only for Asian, but also for everyone, this is just a paradise island.

やっぱりラナイ付のアパートに引っ越そうかな・・・・。

I wonder I should move into a new apartment with lanai.
