Reason for a Backpack

留学する前に、アメリカの青春ものの映画やドラマなどを見ていて常々疑問に思っていたことがある。

Before studying in Hawaii, there is a thing which I always wondered about while watching teen movies and dramas in the U.S.

「なぜみんなバックパックを背負っているの？」

"Why does everybody carry a backpack?"

男性はともかく、女の子たちもみんなバックパック・・・。

Aside from men, girls are also carrying backpacks.

でも、実際ここにきて納得！
 However, coming here helped me understand this mystery.

とにかくアメリカの大学の教科書は大きい、重い、おまけに高いのだ（値段についてはまた別の機会に）！
Textbooks in the U.S are really large and heavy. In addition, they're extremely expensive! (I’m gonna talk about the price next time)!

対するアメリカの教科書は、ほとんどの教科書がそれより大分大き目サイズだ。オールカラーでしかも使われているのはコート紙。（そりゃあ重いに決まってる！）
Most textbooks in the U.S are quite larger than Japanses textbooks. All pages of American textbooks are printed in color, and on coated paper which makes them heavier!

「こんな重い教科書、どうやって持てばいいのよ～＼(*｀∧´)／」と叫んだところでバックパックの出番である。

“How on earth can I bring such heavy textbooks?” I shouted, and then this is where a backpack comes in.

でも、全教科書が重いというわけではないので、これは多分に履修のコンビネーションによるのかもしれない。

But since not all textbooks are heavy, a combination of classes is really important.

特に今期の私は最悪だ！

Especially, my class schedule in this semester is the worst!

火曜日と木曜日はART270とSOC251（社会学）があるんだけど（アメリカの大学は同じ教科の授業が週に２回ずつある）、どちらの教科書もサイズが大きい上、一方は分厚く、もう一方はハードカバーときている。その上、両教科とも副読本までもれなくついてくる。

I’m taking ART270 and SOC251 on Tuesday and Thursday (the university in the U.S has the class of the same subject twice a week. Japanese are also surprised this point,) but both of the textbooks of these two subjects are large, moreover one is thick, and the other has a hard cover. In addition, both subjects require supplementary reader.

とりあえず、厚さを測ってみたところ(わー、ヒマ人！）、8.5ｃｍにもなった。

In any case, I tried to measure thickness, it became 3 inches.

 

他にも留学生の私は、電子辞書が必携だし、サングラスと水はここでは必需品だし、日焼けしたくない私は日傘が手放せないし、図書館が異常に寒い（このエコ問題についてもまた別の機会に）のでユニクロのライトダウンを愛用している。

Otherwise, an electronic dictionary is indispensable for me because I am an international student, and sunglasses and a bottle of water are necessities in Hawaii, and I who do not want to get tanned cannot part with a parasol, and since a library is always abnormally cold (I’m gonna talk about eco issue next time, too), I use a ultra light down Jacket of UNIQLO habitually.

かくして私は、米袋をかついでいるかのようにずっしりと重いバックパックを持ち歩くはめになるのだ。トホホ・・・(･･、)。

In this way, I get stuck with carrying a heavily heavy backpack as if I am shouldering a rice bag.

なで肩で肩こりがち（肩こりは日本人の国民病ともいわれている）な私には非常にハードな火曜と木曜である。ふう～(ｰ｡ｰ)。

Tuesday and Thursday are very tough for me and are apt to leave me with stiff shoulders (It is said that stiff shoulder is Japanese nation disease) because I have sloping shoulders. Phew...
